What is Hypertension?

You may be more familiar with hypertension by its other name, high blood pressure. High blood pressure is a common but potentially dangerous condition in which your heart is working too hard, pushing blood against the walls of your arteries.

Your blood pressure consists of two numbers, the systolic and diastolic. The systolic is written as the top number, and the diastolic is written as the bottom number. The systolic pressure refers to the force that is created by the heart pumping blood out. The diastolic is the pressure in the arteries when the heart rests between beats. Hypertension occurs when either of these numbers is too high, which could lead to serious health issues.

What Are the Risks of Hypertension?

You might associate high blood pressure with an increased risk of heart attack or stroke. These are two of the main risks of high blood pressure, but there are other risks as well. The dangers of hypertension if left untreated include damage to other organs, such as your kidneys, eyes and brain. For these reasons, it is important to keep an eye on your blood pressure and to seek treatment if it is too high.

What Causes Hypertension?

There are risk factors that can increase the likelihood that you will develop hypertension. These include getting older, smoking, being overweight, stress and a family history of hypertension. Hypertension can also be caused or exacerbated by some other conditions, such as sleep apnea and diabetes.

How Is High Blood Pressure Diagnosed?

You might not have any symptoms related to high blood pressure, or you might suffer from such symptoms as headaches, fatigue and difficulty breathing. However, these symptoms generally appear when you have had hypertension for a while and your blood pressure is particularly high.

Your blood pressure will generally be checked as a routine part of any medical exam in men’s healthcare. When you come into Peak TRT and Wellness  for your men’s health assessment, we will check your blood pressure, and if it is high, we’ll discuss a potential plan to address it.
